Profession system administrator. System administrator Courses windows administrator where to go

In this part: more about the life of an enikey worker: how to get a job, what to do, what to avoid, what to strive for.

I'm deferring the question of the "future of a sysadmin" to the next parts - for now I'll focus on how a career starts. I repeat, all this will seem to experienced administrators either offensive or obvious - but I have looked enough this spring at people who are trying to “jump into the industry”, but they are not succeeding. This series of articles is for them. (I don't feel smart enough to talk about the future of careers for people who may have more experience than me.)

Introduction

Until about the mid-2000s, there were two ways to become a system administrator: through the path of an enikey worker and through a specialized higher education (usually, in all kinds of communications institutes). The first gave a lot of experience, the second - quite a lot of knowledge (most of which is not needed). Now a third one has appeared - all kinds of "system administration courses", which, in fact, are ashes and dust (judging by what those who graduated from them know and can do).

For now, I will focus on the first one - namely, “through enikei to admins”.

What should an enikey know?

What I write will cause a storm of indignation (in any case, just such a storm is usually caused by the text of a vacancy with such requirements and a salary of 15-17 tr (St. Petersburg)).

You need to: be able to install Windows, fix its bootloader, know exactly where programs, user data, etc. are located. (what is called "confident windows user"). Further more interesting: you need to have an idea about the SCS (explain which pairs and why are flipped in the cross), know about routing (at the level to explain what the network mask separates from what), DNS (at the level of knowledge about the existence of RR and the ability to determine IP by dns- name in the console), network diagnostics (to know what ping is and be able to interpret its output), you need to have some experience with office applications, be able to read mail server hacks.

Heavy list, right? The last time I was looking for a sysadmin assistant, I decided not to give up and stopped at that level. I must say, the person did (after 3 weeks) was found.

So the first thing is knowledge. Where to get them? Apparently at home. Think carefully about what you are doing, try to figure out the “why”. Every reinstallation of windows from scratch is your loss.

The second is relevance. Free schedule, indulgence in work time - this is the lot of admins. An enikey worker must be on time (and no one cares about a minibus in a traffic jam), he must be friendly to users, he must speak Russian and more or less written etiquette (in order to respond to letters within the company sanely).

Interview

In order to get a job, you need to pass an interview. There are different companies, I don’t know how to behave in a situation of an HR fool or a CEO as an interviewer, but here are a few simple rules that affect whether the interviewing administrator will hire you or not:
  1. No hatred (a bad example: “yes, it’s elementary, well, what can I do here, it’s a trifling task, I don’t like such people, but I can do it”). If you are so smart, why are you claiming to be an "assistant", and not admin for a year already?
  2. Positive attitude. Even if you can't stand Windows and 1C, if you work with them - no (at least at the interview) bayouche about buggy Windows, fucking 1C, stupid lamers, etc. Sample response format: Yes, I know, yes, I can. This and this - probably I can, although I have never done it. This is - I do not know yet, it is difficult to assess the complexity.
  3. Lack of self-confidence. Typical mistakes: “I know everything about Windows”, “I know Linux”, “I know 1C”. The biggest mistake that can be made when interviewing a professional (when the admin interviews you, and not the lady from HR) is to know about great knowledge, but not to show it. In this case, even your little knowledge will not be counted. Be more honest - the clearer your level of knowledge is, the more confidence you have. When you know everything, but you can't do anything, this is the worst option. Frankly, if at my interview a person declares deep knowledge, but in fact he cannot say anything, then the interview can be considered completed at this point (I will reveal this idea a little lower).
  4. Lack of attempts to climb across the father into hell. In my youth, for example, I suffered from this - going to an interview, I tried to find out as much as possible about the structure of the company's network by the headlines of letters. Sometimes I succeeded, and I proudly explained that I already knew a lot about this network. Of course, the reaction was not “oh, how smart he is, we take him right away”, but strictly the opposite - hostile suspicion “what else does he want to sniff out here?”. You are still a stranger to digging - and there is no trust in you yet - "exploratory" enthusiasm is an interest in the "inside" of the company of an outsider, which is definitely a hostile action, especially in the context of widespread fraud with VAT and other "holding business methods".
  5. Of course, no nonsense from books about employment about special enthusiasm for the company. If you get a job at Blablabla LLC, then saying that you would like to work here is a mistake. It will sound fake. (However, if you are going to a big resounding name, then you can say that you would be interested in working in a large company, but it will not affect anything). By the way, I have a suspicion that the phrase “I want to work in a large company” can be interpreted as “I want you as a line in my resume and I won’t stay here for long”, so I would suggest at this stage to refrain from describing my career expectations
  6. No reasoning with what you would like to work with. Let's leave it until you have a specialization - people need a person who will do what they said (remember about the "consumables" from the previous post). You will be able to choose your area of specialization after you have it. Up to this point - what they gave, then you have to eat. Eat, diligently do what they said, and study, study, study
  7. Obvious but important: bring your resume with you. It can help a lot, because sometimes they forget to print / read it, etc., having it with you will firstly show that you are going here, and not just anywhere, and secondly, it will give a drop of human gratitude. It is not necessary to offer it specially, but it is quite possible to put it next to you on the table. In the summary, it makes sense to write a fork from the proposed salary for positions of this kind; it is usually written in the vacancy ± 1t.r.
  8. If they offer to move down, then do not be indignant, say that “this is the lower fork of my expectations, I would like to see a slightly larger amount, if you insist on a lower limit, then if possible, then I would like to think for a while and look at other proposals on the market." This gives both you and the employer a moment of maneuver.
  9. It would be very nice to clarify what will need to be done in the position, but in reality, this is not the position to choose something somewhere.
  10. Do not talk about mega-skills of programming and other cross-stitching. If you're a great programmer, why are you being interviewed for a sysadmin assistant position? This is especially true of knowledge in C, assembler, Java and other things that are definitely not used in system administration. However, if you know how, it’s worth saying that “they can write scripts more or less tolerably” - this will be counted as a plus.
Actually, everything.

Next, you need to assess the adequacy of the people around. Difficult task. You should not flirt with cool admins and panibrat (see item 1), ask what the company does, if you see difficulties in answering, clarify that you are only interested in what you will need to work with according to your job responsibilities. Many companies are a terrible interweaving of different LLCs that do whatever they want, and no one will tell you about the business.

Now let's take a closer look at two typical professional interview mistakes.
I mentioned them above, I write in more detail:

  1. overqualification. If the admin feels uncomfortable next to you, then you are unlikely to get this job. If you need a person to replace cartridges in the accounting department, and you talk about mad skillz in the reverse engineering of hasp keys, then this causes a negative reaction. Why do we need this person? What is he talking about? The same goes for overqualification in general. If you say that in your previous two jobs you administrated a grid of 30 computers, and in general you are a cool admin, then why are you looking for an assistant job now? This question is not idle, and has several important implications for the employer. At the administrator: he wants to move me. A sane admin: is he lying, or why is he going down his career? And one more question: how long will it work for us?
  2. Error in assessing one's own knowledge. I repeat once again: “I know Linux”, “I know windows”, “I know computer networks”, “I know SQL”, etc. - this is an obvious FALSE. Even if you pass the MSCE exam, this does not mean that you know windows. Believe me, there are too many areas of specific knowledge for the average person (do not believe? Ok, we left aside servers, control questions about desktop Windows: How can perfmon show additional performance counters for installed software? Where is the availability of counters controlled? Another question: how how updates are validated; what certificates and settings of the certificate validation service affect this?Third: Where is information about the data that has been changed by MSI installers stored; can this data be changed, and if so, under what conditions?). About "I know linux" - strictly the same. So, we forgot about the arrogant and stupid statements about the inclusiveness of knowledge. Be more precise: "I know and can perform typical operations with windows of such and such versions - reinstall, configure drivers, the simplest network ...". Never make generalizing statements if you don't know the details of what you're talking about - that means you don't even have a general idea of what is there. On the contrary, a detailed description of your superficial skills will give information that you know at least something in the field, and it will be easy to teach you to the desired level.

By the way, about the answer to the question “How long are you going to work with us?” Answer honestly: “I want to gain experience, I think that at least a year, if it’s interesting, then longer.” Quite a reasonable time for an enikey worker. The search for an employee is no less hemorrhoids than the search for a job, so a person with the intention of working for a couple of months will not cause enthusiasm, but the promise to work as an enikey here to the grave will also not inspire confidence in your words.

What to do when you get a job?

This section is about how to perform your duties. About what to do (for your own career advancement, just below).

First, realize why you were hired: to remove work from the administrator. Not too much of it, very rarely the administrator is very busy, but to remove the most unpleasant part of it from him: communication with users and dancing around computers with a tambourine.

A) courtesy. Limit. Even if the asshole is naughty. If they complain about you, and even so that the admin will be called to the carpet, then this is 50% of the departure from work.
b) Memory. Remember, if you were told that in three days it will be necessary to turn off something at 13:00, then you and only you remember about it. You will be reminded that you did not turn it off in 2-3 days, and even declared guilty of all subsequent problems. If you use Outlook - use the scheduler. No - use alarm clocks, sticky notes on the monitor, whatever - but remember. Forgetful enikey workers do not stay at work.
c) Make an effort to solve problems. This will not only make you a little better in the eyes of the admin (getting an “intelligent enikeyist” rating is worth a lot, although do not rely on an increase), but will also give you the very experience that you lack.

In general, this applies not only to the “assistant”, always agree to any one-time job (well, except for working as a drug dealer and missile tester) - once you get more experience from this job than the employer benefits from you. Once they dragged the SCS - a pack of experience, once they figured out the video cameras - another invaluable experience. We learned how to program the PBX system phone - again, experience. Experience, experience, experience. Faced with a problem, try not only to solve it here and now, but dig to the maximum. If you have time, try to Google at least a little about every new name you come across.

What really needs to be done?

By following the above tips, you will be a good Enikey player, but no more. If you want to become an administrator, then:
  • No one will teach you specifically
  • You have every opportunity to learn
  • But no one will offer you these opportunities.

So, you have some time every day between calls from accountants about a stuck button, the message “go fix that unknown garbage” and other stupid, time-eating and low-paying things.

This time can be:
a) Spend on games. Take away immediately. Not only will you waste all your time, but you will also get a lot of problems at work, because you will be stupid, slow down and not have time to do what you said.
b) Spend on surfing, vkontaktik, chatiki, dvachiki, leprosy, and some other service that is remarkable in its socialization. Approximately the same, however, less dangerous for work.
c) Spend on self-study.

And this is the main thing.

Remember, the main differences between an admin and an enikey worker are: theoretical knowledge and experience. You cannot subtract experience, it will come with time. But which one he will come, and, most importantly, the first point depends ONLY on how much you will read.

The flow of knowledge that will fall upon you from the most stupid and zachuhannaya admin book is enough to pump 2-3 levels in administration, and on topics completely unrelated to the topic of the book. (Memories: the book on 2003 ekchange gave me a huge layer of knowledge on the device of Windows and active directory, probably more than about ekchange).

The first books will be insanely hard to read. But you have to do it, because if you don't learn how to learn, then the peak of your career is an elderly half-admin idiot. I met such people, at the age of 45+ they carry naive nonsense about antiviruses and buggy Windows. Mostly these survive in the state. organizations or semi-Soviet offices dying of idleness.

What if there is no literature?

Anyway, read, read, read. Agree with yourself - at least an hour a day to read _BOOK_. Chatter on thematic resources does not count for this. I immediately answer the question of what kind of books: all that somehow relate to what you work with and to which you have reached your hands. For a conditional year, you need to read at least 20-30 books, which is very, very, very much (this is not fiction, some smart books need to be re-read 2-3 times). If you really want guidance - well, at least Albetz and Lee's "DNS and Bind". In principle, Neumet is good, though he is not in the Windows part. From myself, I would also recommend Filimonov, “Fundamentals of Multiservice Ethernet Networks”, which gives a very powerful kick to a bunch of technologies. But, 2-3 weather books do not - read, read, read.

The next item: communication on thematic forums, community, etc. Useful, but not a replacement for books. It is better to read the answers, maximum, ask questions. It's too early to be smart, but if you're being poked into your stupidity, try to find out why you're still an idiot, and don't have a troll battle for the Flamer Cup. If you are already drawn into a dispute, then argue - look for sources, prove it. In principle, one protracted holivar can lead to the fact that you greatly improve your knowledge in the field - but this is on condition that you are trying to prove your point of view from sources, and not loud and powerful IMHO.

Further, as already mentioned earlier, try to figure it out. If you ask idiotic questions about work, then this is normal (note, only that the admin is not a god, and if he brushes it off, then there is a chance that he simply does not know).

What to teach?

As mentioned earlier, at first everything - related questions from books will give you a wide range of primary knowledge.
  • IP routing, and if there is a book, an ethernet device on the second or first levels
  • DNS. Mind you, Microsoft's exam preparation guides are disgusting because they contain almost no information. Read Albetz and Lee
  • Basics of DHCP. You don’t need to know up to a byte, but you need to know exactly who sends what broadcasts when
  • Windows architecture (if you work with it) - any Talmud on windows administration
  • Some books on “general” administration, it will be superficial there, but for the first time it will do
  • HTTP protocol device. I don't know books, learn from what you find. You need to know to the level where you clearly distinguish between POST / GET, both are able to send using telnet / nc.
  • Command line and scripts. If you don't know, you must learn, even for windows. For windows it's a power shell, for Linux it's advanced bash programming. If you don't know programming - learn, learn, learn. There will be no life without foundations.
  • English. If... Chances are you don't know him well enough. That means to teach. To do this, you do not need to cram tension and faces, it is enough to read English literature. With a dictionary. The first dozen pages will be a nightmare, then get used to it. You need to learn English all your life, because the higher the qualification, the less documentation in Russian (in English too, but we will leave these nightmares for later articles). By the way, English-language films with English subtitles (in their free time) help a lot.
  • Something about virtualization. At least one sensible book will give you 10-20 levels in all respects

By the time you learn all this, you will most likely already have some experience and pass for a novice admin.

What to avoid?

This is where we start the hardest part.

Firstly, in the Windows world it is customary to pirate paid software. In the world of Linux, too, only there is almost no paid software, there is a lot of necessary and open source in the repositories, so the problem is less acute.

Our valiant criminal code stipulates that the one who installed the software is to blame. And if according to a memo, then “by prior agreement”, that is, there are no excuses. If something happens, they will try to make you guilty. Keep this in mind, try to stay away from Microsoft, Adobe, Autocad, 1C. Unfortunately, there is no choice, decide for yourself - to risk a potential suspended sentence or it is not illusory to fly out of work "for idiocy." This is a professional risk for many novice admins (as well as the price of working with a well-known windows).

They may try to make you a hybrid of a loader and assistant supply manager. You can’t get away from carrying servers (easy) and server ups (hard), but try to avoid any carefree nonsense. For time eats, but does not add qualifications.

Hello friends! Today we will talk about such a profession as a system administrator. Since our century is the century of technological progress. Machine Age. It is impossible to imagine even the most seedy company without a computer! The director of the enterprise, in the accounting department, in the offices of the heads of departments, and even ordinary employees - everyone has computers at their workplaces.

Corporate mail, news, the market, the bank - all these benefits of the modern workforce undoubtedly help to survive in the cruel world of business. But how do you make it all work together? How to make sure that employees are not “in contact” and “classmates” sitting during working hours, but doing business? How to protect confidential information from a work computer from hackers? That's why there is such a profession as a system administrator.

If you ask Google who this is, he will answer something like this:

System administrator - an employee whose job responsibilities include ensuring the regular operation of the computer equipment, network and software park, as well as ensuring information security in the organization.

In the people, such a specialist is simply called "admin" or "sysadmin".

So let's take a look...

What does he do

The duties of a system administrator include ensuring the stable operation of computer equipment.

This stage includes:

  1. installation and configuration (and sometimes even purchase) of computers,
  2. component and peripheral devices (printers, scanners, etc.)

When doing this, the main thing is to lay computer communications so that even the most sophisticated worker does not pull out the plug with his foot and pour coffee into the system unit.

The most difficult thing in the work is to explain to the beautiful blonde secretary of the chef that it is not necessary to pin the mouse wire with buttons to the table, even if it interferes a lot)))

  • Setting up programs and ensuring their stable, reliable operation will be, perhaps, the most time-consuming work. Software can be completely different, depending on the specifics of the enterprise. For example, from the usual Microsoft word & excel, to the ORACLE DBMS and accounting programs.

The main problem in the operation of the software is, unfortunately, precisely the human factor, since usually complaints from employees to the system administrator begin with the words: “I clicked in the wrong place and everything suddenly disappeared somewhere.” To synchronize the work of programs and set the correct protection "from fools" - that's, consider, half of the work of a system administrator.

  • Also, the system administrator must know and be able to correctly configure access settings so that each employee can turn on only his computer, his profile, run only those programs that he has access to according to his status in the campaign. If the work of employees is connected to the Internet, then the system administrator will have to configure the access settings to the World Wide Web so that neither “in contact” nor “classmates” so beloved by office workers are accessible from work computers.

The system administrator is a very significant figure in the company, like a horse on a chessboard. It seems that he is not the most important person, but without him it is absolutely impossible. Sometimes it is enough to complete courses for the administrator to become the master of office computers. And after all, computers tend to break down, both for an ordinary employee and for the general director.

You can learn more about what the system admin does by watching the video.

Pros of the profession

Almost complete independence can be attributed to the incomparable advantages of the work, because it is almost impossible to find a person in the company who will understand computers at the system administrator level and will check your work. It is the system administrator who is the “virtual director” in the campaign, therefore, having correctly configured the equipment and given valuable instructions to the “office plankton”, you can safely spend gray working days, indulging in social networks or online games absorbing modern youth. In addition, solving problems with the technique of superiors and senior management (top manager, chief accountant, personnel officers, etc.) will ensure good connections and help in moving up the corporate ladder.

Paperwork, again, for representatives of this profession is an order of magnitude less than for other workers. As practice shows, until at the end of the month, the year, the heads of departments, subordinates, intensively write reports, balance accounts and sum up - system administrators in their office spin twisted-pair soldiers.

The obvious advantages include the salary of system administrators. According to the site “job.ru”, companies are willing to pay an average of $1,200 to $3,000 for services of this kind.

The disadvantages (cons) of the profession include:

  1. Uneven and sometimes high workload. Through the efforts of negligent users, computers fail and break with enviable regularity in almost any enterprise.
  2. Misunderstanding and sometimes absolute unwillingness to understand how the system works at all. The mouse is buggy - the system administrator is to blame. The site does not work - the system administrator is to blame. The power supply has burned out - the system administrator is to blame. And go and prove that the voltage in the mains does not depend on you!
  3. Limited opportunities for career growth. If the company's activities are not related to the provision of services in the field of information technology, then there is nothing more to count on except for an increase in salary.

Characteristic

What qualities are necessary for a good system administrator?

  • First, he must have a good technical education. Knowing what is a system unit and what is a monitor and how to reinstall the operating system will obviously not be enough.
  • Secondly, a good system administrator must speak English at a level clearly superior to the basic one.

Most of the programs, and in particular the technical description, is attached to them in English, and gaps in knowledge of the language can be expensive, and in a reputable company there is nothing to do without knowledge of a foreign language.

  • And, finally, thirdly, sociability, the ability to find an approach to colleagues at work will provide the system administrator not only with additional cookies for coffee, but sometimes with a good bonus.

If you are used to working independently, speak English well and know how to find an approach to people, this job is for you. Yes, and wages will allow you to provide not only yourself, but also your family to please, and in our information society a person with this kind of profession will never be left without work.

Regards, Alexey!

The computer has become so firmly established in our lives that we can no longer imagine existence without this device. Moreover, to some extent we all depend on it. So, are the gloomy predictions of futurologists and authors of films and books coming true, who in the last century predicted that the world would be ruled by a computer? Of course not!

The computer has become so firmly established in our lives that we can no longer imagine existence without this device. Moreover, to some extent we all depend on it. Judge for yourself, we are looking for the necessary information on the net, we read books there, we communicate with each other on Skype, we talk about ourselves on social networks. Even in companies computer is a means of communication between employees, and it also controls the entire technological process in a serious production. So, are the gloomy predictions of futurologists and authors of films and books coming true, who in the last century predicted that the world would be ruled by a computer?

Of course not! After all, a computer, although it is smart, is still a machine, meaningless iron, which can only work under human control. Therefore, in almost every company, large or small, there is a person - System Administrator- which monitors the operation of computers and troubleshoots system problems. Who is he, the lord of "smart iron" and the tamer of "servers"? You will learn this from our article, in which we will try to tell as much as possible about the features of this profession.

Who is a system administrator?

System administrator (sysadmin, admin) - an employee of the company associated with IT technologies, responsible for the smooth operation of the regular computer hardware, software and network. Quite often, the system administrator is also entrusted with ensuring information security in the organization.

The name of the profession comes from the Latin systema (whole, consisting of several parts) and administrator (manager, leader). In this case, the "whole" refers to a computer, consisting of a huge number of components: from hardware to software. System administrator profession arose quite recently, only some 20-30 years, when computers appeared in production and in offices.

The responsibilities of a system administrator include:

  • setting up and testing new computer equipment;
  • installation of software and anti-virus protection;
  • monitoring the uninterrupted operation of a computer network;
  • elimination of failures and debugging of the computer after them;
  • installation and adjustment of local networks, monitoring their work;
  • maintenance of the company's server;
  • monitoring the status of computers (as well as faxes, printers, scanners, etc.), identifying obsolete equipment and drawing up applications for the purchase of a new one.

Often, the job responsibilities of system administrators include other requirements dictated by the characteristics of the enterprise and production needs. At the same time, the schedule and plan system administrator work also depends on the specifics of the enterprise. What is meant?

In large companies, which is natural, there are entire departments involved in system administration, since the number of computers and the size of local networks is huge. Therefore, each system administrator has his own front of work, for which he is responsible.

In small offices, companies, firms, schools or hospitals, as a rule, one or two system administrators work. These are already specialists of a wider profile, and, accordingly, they have much more responsibilities.

Also, a system administrator can be an employee of a specialized company that maintains computers in other institutions. It employs specialists who have a narrow range of responsibilities (for example, 1C program administrators, local network administrators, webmasters, etc.).

What personal qualities should a system administrator have?

Since the main working tool of any system administrator is the eyes and hands (and the brain, of course), representatives of this profession must have good eyesight, developed hand motor skills and the absence of diseases of the central nervous system. In addition, it is impossible to imagine a system administrator who would not have:

It should also be noted that a person who wants to become a system administrator must have a technical education, preferably related to IT technologies. Why is it desirable? Because there are many cases when self-taught became system administrators. But it must be admitted that the level of progress in this area is such that the higher the level of the company, the more serious the requirements for the knowledge of professionals, and one cannot do without education. Moreover, you need to quickly navigate the latest achievements of science and technology and new software, and therefore there is nothing to do in this profession without the ability to self-educate.

Benefits of being a system administrator

Since computer technologies are developing at an incredible speed, and computers are becoming more confidently an integral part of all spheres of human life, the main advantage of the profession of a system administrator we can safely name the demand, which will only grow day by day. In the modern labor market, there is already a shortage of talented system administrators, and apparently this situation will only get worse.

An important advantage of this profession is also good, and for professionals of the highest level - excellent wages. At the same time, depending on the complexity of the system being serviced, these specialists can count on a continuous increase in wages. Today, the average monthly salary of a system administrator in Russia is 40-50 thousand rubles. In addition, system administrators have great opportunities for additional earnings, if only they had a computer and the Internet at home, and, of course, the desire to earn money.

Many system administrators are pleased with the work schedule. Naturally, if an employee is a full-time specialist in a large company, then he has working hours. But if the system administrator is “coming” or a freelancer, then his work schedule is free.

Disadvantages of the System Administrator Profession

Disadvantages of the System Administrator Profession associated with difficult working conditions. First of all, these are high eye strain, the need for constant concentration of attention and increased irritability because some users (especially those who have mastered a computer in adulthood) add problems to both him and themselves due to their own indiscretion. Here you can say: “Calm, only calm!”, Otherwise, you can get stress.

Another drawback is isolation and lack of communication, since the system administrator works with equipment and often does not see the company's employees. If this is a normal state for you, then there is nothing to worry about, but for those who care about live communication, this can be a problem.

It is also impossible to keep silent about the fact that almost all the technical literature necessary for a system administrator to work is written in English. And not in the literary language, which can be learned in the courses. Therefore, specialists often have to spend most of their working time not on their favorite pastime, but on translating special terms that cannot be found in a regular dictionary.
